Why documenting every day life is so important

Image
Just watch this film. Back in the days when it was created the contents of the film were not that exiting (despite the fact that the medium film was brand new). But today it is fascinating to look through a tiny window back in time. These filmmakers also did a great job in terms of street photography. It is not important if the things are moving or not in front of the viewers eyes. It is the documenting style that tries to capture life as it is.

The upcoming X-Pro2 - is Fuji doing the right thing?

Image
You heard the rumors ? Something new is coming in January next year. And yes, they are doing the right thing. Consistency is a good road to follow. If there is a successful functional design people are easily get used to you should only change a few bits and some inner values to make it even better. The X-Pro1 is such a product. When you hold this camera in your hands it feels just right (if you are a rangefinder type person like me). Size, weight are perfect and the usability is simple with the manual controls (still love the reintroduction of the aperture-ring by Fuji). The OVF ist often used by me in conjunction with zone focusing. So it is not as gimmicky as other people said on the web because it gives me that freedom to see more of whats happening around the framelines like you know from other rangefinder cameras. And there is no screen or other distractions (exposure preview, histogram...) between me and the subject. So I am glad that Fuji will continue this great strategy i

Only street photography?

No way. Don´t put your mind into a closed narrow box. There are main topics that will drive you through the whole thing, but don´t forget that creativity does not follow any rules. Yesterday I had one hour of spare time in the streets. So I walked around and played with the things that came in front of my eyes. These are the resulting images: As you can see, there are many different styles and topics. There are lines, boats, people, lights, holes and other things that attracted me to take a photo off. Even if you don´t use all this photos later on they are important as a visual diary (capturing the mood, the weather etc.) you can flip through to get some inspiration.

Looking back at 2015

The older you get the faster time goes by. This is why we need some memorabilia to remember certain things and situations. I love to look at my older photos like a visual diary that guides my through the past. Here are my favorite photos of 2015: 1 - This kind of hard contrast photos always have my attention. You can change the whole scene just with a different exposure-setting. My wife said it looks kind of scary. But in reality it was not. 2 - Lines and holes. We love to peek through a peep- or keyhole. Lines are guiding our eyes creating leading structures in photographs. This one contains a pyramid, diagonals and horizontals. It took some time to wait for the woman entering the scene. But it was worth the time. 3 - I stumbled into this (messed up but interesting) bookshop by accident. I´ve walked this street a hundred times before. But this day I saw this little shop for the first time. The owner appeared after I entered the shop and we had a little chat about Sen

Yesterday I enjoyed my beginning Xmas vacation by walking through the city of Hamburg. These are the results...

Using the X Pro 1 at night

Image
A real challenge for photography is using your equipment after dusk. And even my trusty X Pro 1 will stand this battle without a flaw. I mainly used the 18mm and the 27mm to capture some photos in the beautiful historic city of Luebeck. There where a lot of Xmas fairs going on. The most shots were taken with an aperture of 2-2.8 to get higher shutter speeds to capture movings things with a little motion blur.

Collecting strange things

Image
As a photographer you look a bit different at the things that are surrounding you every day. And the smallest camera you have with you is your smartphone. So there are plenty of possibilities to collect strange things for your visual diary. Don´t be too focused to taking great photos in the streets, architecture etc. For me photography should not be reduced to one or two topics, projects or whatever. Just play with it and get some new ideas. Read this great article written by a philosophic photographer known as Eric Kim.

And a volcano... He asked me why took the photo after the shot. I said to him that he was looking interesting to me in this setting with his cigarette in his hands. We smiled at each other and it was fine!

The newest and hottest $cameramanufacturer$ rumor

is that there is a new tool coming today that will deliver great images. The name of the tool? (drum-roll!) creativity! Yeah! Creativity is always there if your need it. You can trigger it with a second feature that is on the list: inspiration! "But from where can I get that inspiration you are talking about?" That is easy. You can gain it from nearly every place and time you can imagine. Just look around you. What can you do with the things that are surrounding your at the moment? What can you do with the camera you actually holding in your hands? Don´t think too much about it. pssst! want to buy some inspiration? Instead of dreaming of cameras and other gadgets you can go out and get some inspiration now. Even at a nice cafĂ© or at work there are thousands of ideas waiting for you. And you don´t need the latest shit to make something great out of your new inspirations. You can even use your phone to take some nice photos that are worth to be hanged to a wa
